An outbreak of staphylococcal food poisoning in the Municipality of Passos, MG, Brazil BABT
Carmo,Luiz Simeão do; Dias,Ricardo Souza; Linardi,Valter Roberto; Sena,Maria José de; Santos,Deise Aparecida dos.
An outbreak of staphylococcal food poisoning involving 42 people who had eaten a meal at a restaurant in the Municipality of Passos, Minas Gerais, Brazil, is reported. Thirty-one of the individuals became ill with vomiting, diarrhea and dizziness within 30 minutes after eating the meal. The foods suspected were: chicken pancake, rice, beans, tomato sauce and mashed chick-peas. Large numbers (> 2.0x10(8) CFU/g) of enterotoxigenic staphylococci were present in the chicken pancake. These strains produced enterotoxins A, B and D. Swabs from the nasal cavity and throat and from under the fingernails of food handlers were cultured for the detection of enterotoxigenic staphylococci carriers. Four out of five of them were healthy carriers of enterotoxin A, B, C...

Biofilms: microbes and disease BJID
Aparna,Madhu Sharma; Yadav,Sarita.
Bacteria that attach to surface aggregate in a hydrated polymeric matrix of their own synthesis to form biofilms. These represent microbial societies with their own defense and communication system. Transitioning from acute to chronic infection is frequently associated with biofilm formation.Bacteria in biofilms are innately more resistant to antimicrobial agents. The presence of indwelling medical devices increases the risk for biofilm formation and subsequent infection. The current antibiotic therapies are of limited effectiveness in resolving biofilms infection. This review attempts to discuss the stages in biofilm formation, their pathogenic mechanisms, effect of antimicrobial agents, detection and eradication of the biofilms.

Farnesol in combination with N-acetylcysteine against Staphylococcus epidermidis planktonic and biofilm cells BJM
Gomes,Fernanda; Leite,Bruna; Teixeira,Pilar; Azeredo,Joana; Oliveira,Rosário.
Staphylococcus epidermidis is the most frequent cause of nosocomial sepsis and catheter-related infections, in which biofilm formation is considered to be the main virulence mechanism. In biofilm environment, microbes exhibit enhanced resistance to antimicrobial agents. This fact boosted the search of possible alternatives to antibiotics. Farnesol and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) are non-antibiotic drugs that have demonstrated antibacterial properties. In this study, the effect of farnesol and NAC isolated or in combination (farnesol+NAC) was evaluated. NAC at 10 × MIC caused a total cell death in planktonic cells. On the other hand, S. epidermidis biofilms exhibited 4 log reduction in viable cell number after a 24h treatment with NAC at the former...

This study evaluated the BHIA screening method with 4 or 6 mug/mL of vancomycin to detect glycopeptides heteroresistant staphylococci strains isolated from bacteremia. A total of 213 staphylococci strains were isolated from 106 patients between October/2001 and November/2002 in a tertiary hospital in Rio de Janeiro city. Fifty-seven (53.8%) patients presented Staphylococcus aureus, while coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) were isolated from 49 (46.2%). Resistance rates for oxacillin of 26.3% and 81.6% were found for the staphylococci isolates, respectively. Thirteen CNS isolated from nine (8.5%) patients grew on agar screening with 4 mug/mL of vancomycin and showed heterogeneous profiles of resistance for vancomycin and teicoplanin by the population...

Identification and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Staphylococcus spp. isolated from canine chronic otitis externa Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,N..
Swab samples obtained from 96 dogs with chronic otitis externa were cultured for the isolation of Staphylococcus species. Of 57 staphylococcal strains, 41 (72%) were coagulase-negative (CNS). The identification of staphylococci strains was made by standard procedures for the routine identification of staphylococci in clinical practice. S. sciuri was the most frequent species isolated (22.8%) from chronic otitis externa in dogs followed by S. intermedius (12.3%), S. auricularis (10.5%) and S. aureus (8.8%). Three (5.2%) CNS strains could not be identified. Bacterial isolates were susceptible to enrofloxacin, gentamicin, cephalothin, chloramphenicol and neomycin. Resistance was most common to penicillin G, oxacillin and ampicillin.

Outbreaks associated to bloodstream infections with Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp in premature neonates in a university hospital from Brazil BJM
Brito,Denise Von Dolinger de; Oliveira,Elias Jose; Darini,Ana Lúcia da Costa; Abdallah,Vânia Olivetti Steffen; Gontijo Filho,Paulo P..
Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are among the most important nosocomial pathogens in patients from neonatal intensive care units, mainly in bloodstream infections. The main objective of this study is to determine the occurrence of nosocomial infections by these microorganisms using two surveillance systems (Laboratorial Surveillance and National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance System) and to determine the most important risk factors during a two-year period (2001-2002). Two outbreaks by both methicillin susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) (1.5%) and methicillin resistant CoNS (MRCoNS) (1.0%) were observed, from January to February/02 and August to September/02. Endemic incidence rates of 3.77% and 5.16% of S. aureus and CoNS,...

TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
BERGDOLL,M. S..
Toxic shock syndrome is a staphylococcal disease caused by toxins produced by the staphylococci, toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 and enterotoxin B. The disease results from staphylococci growing in the vagina with the use of tampons during menstruation, primarily in young women. However, any staphylococcal infection can result in toxic shock syndrome if the staphylococci produce the appropriate toxins and the individual has no antibodies to the toxins. The symptoms can be quite severe, with high fever, low blood pressure, diffuse macular erythroderma, orthostatic dizziness, vomiting and or diarrhea at the onset, severe myalgia, peeling of the skin of the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet after seven to ten days, and death in some cases. The disease...
